Refrigerants Now and in the Future 

Environmental issues have driven changes in the refrigerants used in air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. This presentation will provide a brief historical perspective of refrigerants that have been used in the past, look at refrigerants that were introduced to deal with ozone depletion and finally take a look at refrigerants that are being considered down the road to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  We will also review changes being made to ASHRAE Standards 34 and 15 as well as the codes to deal with the new refrigerants. 

 

Guest Speaker:  Bill Walter

Bill Walter is Manager of Industrial Relations at Carrier Corporation.He is Chairman of the Code Interaction Subcommittee and a Member of the General Standards Committee of The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI).  Bill is a recipient of ARI's Standards Achievement Award.  He has dedicated his time and expertise to numerous ASHRAE committees and is currently president of the Central New York Chapter.  Bill is a past convener of the ISO working group on Designation and Safety Classification of Refrigerants. His education includes B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry from the State University of New York and an M.B.A. from Syracuse University.

Gas Detection Technologies & HVAC Applications

Why gas measurement is important and various methods of detecting the presence or absence of gas will be discussed.  The following topics will be covered:

  • Dangers of toxic and combustible gases in the workplace
  • Review of hygiene and safety terminology (i.e. TLV, LEL, ect.)
  • Review of standardsapplicable to gas detection in the commercial HVAC market (ASHRAE, OSHA, IEC, NFPA, etc.)
  • Current sensor technology in gas detection.
  • Designing a gas detection system for different applications including IAQ.
  • Best practices for installing gas detection systems.

 

Guest Speaker:  Philipp Zeissig

Philipp Zeissig is a Territory Manager for MSA ( Mining Safety Appliances) responsible for marketing gas and flame detection instruments in the Northeastern U.S.  Philipp has worked on hundreds of gas detection projects for many different industries for the past 18 years while living in Mexico City, Houston, San Francisco and Boston.  He currently resides in North Reading, MA with his wife and two children.
