Tech Session:  5:00 - 6:00 pm

Refrigerant Piping Systems Design

This session will include review of basic refrigerant piping systems design.  The various components used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems and the proper application of these components will be discussed.  Proper pipe sizing and use of double suction and hot gas risers will be presented along with good piping practices to ensure proper oil return and reliable system operation. 

Guest Speaker:  Dan Cowen, Chapter Refrigeration Committee Chair

Dan is a graduate of the University of New Haven and holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.  His prior experience includes positions as Machinist mate on a United States Submarine and civilan employment as a refrigeration technician.  He has worked extensively with refrigerant piping systems during his employment with J.P. Kemp Company where the focus is on refrigeration system design and installation.  While at the University of New Haven Dan founded the UNH Student Chapter of ASHRAE and has served as our chapter Chairman for Student Activities and Refrigeration Committees.

 

 

Dinner Session:  6:45 - 8:30 pm

Absorbtion Refrigeration and Combined Heating / Cooling Plants

 The basics of absorbtion refrigeration will be reviewed including both single and double effect cycles.  Economics and life cycle cost comparison with other types of chiller plants will be examined.  The current trends in combined cooling / heating plants and corresponding economics will be presented as well as the impact on CO2 emmisions of comparative systems.  The presentation will conclude with a review of several case studies.

 

Guest Speaker - Doug Davis, Director of Marketing, Broad USA

Doug Davis is a graduate engineer from Purdue University andthe Trane Company's Graduate Engineer Training Program.  He has been involved in the desogn, sales and installation of over 100,000 tons of commercial chillers in North America, Korea and Russia.  Doug's previouspositions include Sales Engineer and Account Executive with The Trane Company and Manager of Engineering Sales with McQuay International in New York City.  Prior to joining Broad USA Doug worked at Columbia University where he was responsible for the design, construction and installation of a few large absorption plants.

 

Doug is currently the Director of Marketing and Account Manager at Broad USA.  Originally from Delaware, he currently resides with his wife in West New York, NJ.
